2012 Tournament Results

Twelve teams took to the ice on January 21st and 22nd hoping to win the title of “Pond Hockey Champs.” The Level One tournament was won by the Sons of Thunder, a team from the Metroplex Christian Hockey Association of Dallas, TX. The Urban Sasquatch of Creede/Denver placed 2nd.
The Level 2 tournament was won by The Pond Kings, returning for their 5th year and winning their first Championship! The Lumberjacks, made up of Forest Service employees, came in a close second and only lost by one goal in overtime.

“The Golden Pick” Tommyknocker Pond Hockey Tournament is planned again for 2012!
Dates: January 21st and 22nd

This tourney will bring back childhood memories of afternoon hockey games played against friends. This annual tournament has been a huge hit, bringing the locals out to cheer on teams from all over Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas (and we are extending our invitation to hockey rinks all across the west)! The 3-on-3 round robin format insures that everyone plays at least 2-3 games (plus tourney play), local restaurants insure that everyone eats well, and the Tommyknocker Tavern hosts live music for evening entertainment.

Creede has two ponds just north of town that serve as the host site for this tournament. The ponds are at 8900 feet, making this one of the highest pond hockey tournaments on earth. The scenery is incredible! You will be skating beneath 800 ft canyon walls with wildlife roaming nearby. Bonfires burn near the ponds all day and the Community Center opens their bar and offers “locker room” space.

Registration from 7:30-8:30 on Saturday
First game at 9am each day

Tournament Levels

This Pond Hockey Tournament will bring back childhood memories of pick-up games played against friends. Pure fun, not levels. There were always a few good players – and everyone else. That is what the Golden Pick is all about!

There are two levels in this tournament: a Level 1 Team might have a couple of people that played in high school but were not stars, with the remaining players have a good mix of skills. A Level 2 Team might have one or two people that played organized hockey, but not necessarily in high school, and the rest of the team has just started to get into hockey…

For Durango players: a Level 1 Team for pond hockey in Creede would have one Level 1 player, one or two level 2 players, and the rest level 3 and4 players. A Level 2 Team would have 2 or 3 level 3 players and the rest level 4 or 5.

Directions to Ponds

From South Fork:

Drive into Creede on Highway 149 and take a left at the gas station. Drive over the small bridge and take a right. You are now on Main Street. Follow this street through town (about 8 blocks). The road curves left, and comes to a stop sign. Take a right to continue into the canyon. The ponds will be just ahead the the right, and the Community Center is in the cliffs to the left!

Time from Durango in good weather: 2.5 hours
Time from Denver in good weather: 4.5 hours
Time from Pueblo in good weather: 3.5 – 4 hours
Time from Gunnison in good weather: 2.5 hours

2011 Tournament Results

Fifteen teams took to the ice on January 15th and 16th hoping to win the title of “Pond Hockey Champs.” The Level One tournament was won by the N.Y.P.D. (Now You Pay Dearly) from the Denver area. The Dreadwings of Detroit placed 2nd for the second year in a row.
The Level 2 tournament was won by “KG & the Sunshine Band,” a team from the Metroplex Christian Hockey Association of Dallas, TX. The Pond Kings, returning for their 4th year, came in a close second, losing by one goal in overtime.

Wookies Take 2010 Pond Hockey Tournament

The Wookies from Denver won the tournament and The Dread Wings of Broomfield and Detroit, came in a close second.

In the B-League, the Metroplex Christian Hockey Association (MCHA) from Dallas, TX won the Championship round, with Creede’s own PBR/Kips Grill team taking second place.

Jason Eady and Jamie Wilson in 2010!

Jason Eady and Jamie Wilson performed at the Tommyknocker Tavern on Saturday, January 16th, 2010 around 9pm.

Jason Eady of Austin, TX recently released his new album “When the Money’s All Gone” and has been touring like crazy. He plays at the MusicFest in Steamboat the weekend before the tournament! He plays Americana/Roots/Folk Rock music, and will team up with Jamie Wilson for part of the show. Jamie Wilson is sometimes found on stage with her long time group The Gougers, her all chick band The Trishas, her ‘country hits’ group Johnny and the Footlights or just by her awesome self solo. With a hypnotic voice, impressive songwriting, seasoned showmanship and a killer sense of humor Wilson puts on a show that will make you a fan for life.

$1000 Award for Winning Hockey Team in 2010

The Golden Pick is thrilled to announce cash prize awards in the A-league tournament. In 2010, the winning team will receive $1000 and the second place team $500, both along with commemorative hockey pucks!

A gracious donation from the Creede Parallel Universe Fund, managed by John and Judith Mattingly, is making this possible in 2010. The Golden Pick is excited and grateful to have such support from local community members!
